Allentown Holding Public Meetings on Arena Plan

Allentown to hold three public meetings on arena project,
Question-and-answer sessions with planners are set for Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1.

After months during which Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski and city officials have been criticized for planning perhaps the largest public project in the city’s history behind closed doors, the city has announced three open houses, beginning at the end of the month.
The format is purposely intimate. Rather than a pulse-less PowerPoint presentation during a public meeting attended by hundreds of people, aspects of the arena project will be divided into stations, where people can question arena planners face to face.

This is the debate that should be, but isn’t really, happening in Pennsylvania. The bills are dying on PA Rep. Ron Marsico’s desk. Bill White, one of the panelists at the November 17th edition of Beerituality, shares one of the reasons in this post.
To my many Catholic friends and readers: please know that this isn’t meant to single out your faith tradition. God knows this sin is everywhere. And it’s also important for the public, Catholic or otherwise, to know where local or regional incarnations of the institution, complete with legislative apparatuses, stand on bills like PA HBs 832 and 878. Given what we know about how long it can take to remember abuse, let alone feel confidant about reporting it, statues of limitations for sex crimes without any kind of “window” for adults recalling childhood abuse seem counter-intuitive to my way of thinking.

No, wait. I just thought about the fact that Americans used to make things, like steel, that were used to build things, like bridges. Still, this will not be a cynical “and now all we make are blogs” kind of post. Division of labor and all of that. Quite.
Come quickly, green industry. Maranatha, renewable energy production. We have the vacant buildings on the river to accommodate your needs. We know the Steel isn’t coming back, that China leads the world in the cement production (and cement-related air pollution). But we also know that a service-based economy only lasts so long (I’m thinking until about 2008).
