50 Years Ago, People Lived in the Future

Why can’t we?

Longtime readers know that I love the space-race aesthetics of the 50s and 60s.  The Atlantic Cities site has a new feature up about the 50th Anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair.

What ever happened to the New Frontier?  It feels too easy to say “the rest of the 60s,” but maybe that’s it.

  1. I need to say more here. 50 years ago, people also spent a hell of a lot of time living in the 19th century, a fact that I didn’t mean to gloss over.

Here in Allentown, 2012 marks the 250th anniversary of the City, the 200th anniversary of Lehigh County (as a political entity) and the 50th anniversary of the Liberty Bell Shrine/Museum. I’m thinking a lot about what the next 50 years will hold. What do you hope they’ll hold for your community?
