New York Magazine Puts Gradations on the Severity of the Trayvon Martin Case

journalism, justice

I’m on the email list for New York magazine’s Daily Intel Digest.   Today’s digest came with a troubling subject line:

No. The shooting hasn’t worsened. Travyon Martin was murdered in cold blood by a mentally unstable would-be vigilante. That doesn’t worsen.  It’s already a travesty, and the incompetence of the local police is already a grave injustice.

Trayvon Martin is dead because he walked outside while being black and drew the attention of a sick George Zimmerman.   New York, do you think Travyon’s parents feel worse today than they did yesterday?

Really, what the hell?

Daily Intel is known for catchy headings before their stories.  Here again they’re coming up woefully small:

The word misdemeanor belongs nowhere near this story.

Dear Other White People,

This is the institutionalized racism you keep hearing about.

  1. I would argue that the word “Intel” also has no business being on the page. Hey, just came across your blog while trying to search out a vigil in Allentown for him tonight. Have you heard of one? Want to start one?
